Designed to offer moments of calm reasoning and rewarding revelation, nonograms invite solvers to bring hidden images to life, one square at a time. The result is an experience that is both relaxing and absorbing – perfect for anyone who enjoys a thoughtful challenge.
Previously published under the name Hanjie, this logical gem has been treated to comprehensive consumer research across the UK, with surveys and in‑person focus groups. The most striking of the findings revealed that while the puzzle has become a truly international favourite, it is overwhelmingly recognised by fans as nonogram, rather than hanjie or any other name.
In response, we’ve embraced the globally familiar name and launched a dedicated monthly magazine to bring the puzzle to the widest possible audience.
Greg Warren, Puzzler’s resident logic expert and editor of Puzzler Nonogram, shares insight into the puzzle’s unique origins and the delights that await readers:
“These puzzles were originally devised by Japanese creator Non Ishida, who became inspired after winning a competition to design a light display in the windows of a skyscraper. She realised that the same principles of pattern and illumination could be translated into grid-based logic puzzles – and the nonogram was born.
“Inside Puzzler Nonogram, solvers will find over 40 carefully crafted pixel‑art puzzles that reward patience and logical thinking. By using the numerical clues and working steadily through each grid, an image gradually appears. Whether you uncover an elephant or an igloo, a family portrait or a frigate, something whimsical or something wonderfully unexpected, each finished puzzle delivers an unmistakable sense of achievement.”
Shameem Begg, Head of Promotions & Innovations at Puzzler Media, added:
“Puzzler Nonogram offers a welcome point of difference within the puzzles category and has been greeted with real enthusiasm from retail partners. We’re thrilled to have secured significant listings across major UK retailers including Tesco, Co-op, Morrisons, Asda, Waitrose, WHSmith Travel and TGJones. It’s fantastic to see such strong support for a new title that brings something genuinely fresh and innovative to the puzzle market.”
